Abu Dhabi fines paper factory Dh15,000 over air quality violations

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) has imposed a Dh15,000 fine on a paper and plastic manufacturing facility in Industrial City Abu Dhabi (ICAD) for multiple environmental infractions.

Breaches and penalties

The agency cited deterioration of storage silos, excessive emissions, and non-compliance with required standards for air pollution control as the reasons for the penalty. The factory was found to be in violation of approved environmental norms aimed at curbing airborne pollutants.

In a social media post on Thursday, EAD stated that the enforcement action was part of its ongoing efforts to protect air quality and ensure adherence to environmental regulations. The agency noted that it continues to conduct regular inspection rounds to verify full compliance with environmental requirements, thereby contributing to the preservation of air quality and public health.

“Reducing emissions improves air quality and limits the exposure of community members and workers to pollutants that can affect human health,” the agency added.

Clean air strategy

Abu Dhabi introduced an action plan in 2024 designed to enhance air quality, reduce noise pollution, and hold industries accountable for their environmental impact. Under this plan, all businesses and establishments requiring environmental licences to operate were mandated to commit to supporting cleaner air initiatives.

The local measures followed the launch of the UAE National Air Quality Agenda 2031 in 2022, which calls on both public and private sectors to take steps to reduce air pollution.
