UAE warns of possible flight delays as autumn fog reduces visibility

Flight delays possible due to autumn weather

Travellers across the United Arab Emirates should get ready for potential flight disruptions because seasonal weather is lowering visibility in several areas.

The General Civil Aviation Authority has warned that shifting weather patterns could affect airport operations nationwide, which might lead to some delays. It noted that such conditions regularly occur during the UAE’s autumn season.

Airlines and airport operators have put in place measures that follow standard operating procedures and aviation safety rules, the authority said. It added that any interruptions would be handled according to strict safety protocols.

Passengers are advised to look for updates through official airline and airport channels.

Types of fog found in the UAE

During the cooler winter months fog frequently appears, covering coastal skyscrapers and desert dunes alike.

Approximately ninety‑five percent of the fog in the country is radiation fog. This form develops in the early hours when heat stored in the ground during the day radiates upward, turning moisture into droplets. It clears as the sun warms the atmosphere.

Another variety observed is advection fog, which arises when warm, moist air moves over a cooler surface, producing water vapour.

Speed limit reductions and safety alerts

Recent heavy fog prompted authorities to lower speed limits in Abu Dhabi this week, while a safety warning was issued for Dubai.

Alerts were sent to drivers in parts of Abu Dhabi informing them that the limit had been cut to eighty kilometres per hour, and motorists in Dubai were urged to drive carefully because of poor visibility.

Fog statistics over the years

Since records started in 2006, the United Arab Emirates has averaged one hundred and thirty‑two days of fog formation each year.

The longest period on record occurred in 2010, when there were seventeen days of fog and five days of mist in January.
