Abu Dhabi Announces Major Mussafah Road Upgrades to Ease Traffic

Abu Dhabi Announces Major Mussafah Road Upgrades to Ease Traffic

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a major upgrade programme for Mussafah Road in Abu Dhabi aimed at easing congestion, improving road safety and cutting travel times for commuters and businesses.

Scope of the works

The upgrade will cover approximately 13 kilometres along E30 and 8th Street, with the stated goals of improving traffic flow and reducing journey times across the area.

Details from DMT announcement

A post shared on X by DMT states that the key areas are ‘coordinated within two strategic projects starting from the Haddars – Nuof E11 intersection spanning 37 kilometres and extending to the implementation of new tunnels, roads, and intersections in the Haddars area.’ When completed, the project will include direct intersections which will cut travel time and allow for easy connectivity between vital areas across various parts of Abu Dhabi.

Key features of the Mussafah scheme

A central element will be a new free‑flowing highway on 8th Street, providing three lanes in each direction. Three additional lanes on each side will give nearby shops and amenities access while separating local traffic from the main motorway movements. The highway is expected to accommodate about 4,000 vehicles.

Additional enhancements include upgrades to four interchanges along E30, improved connections with 8th Street and E20, and modifications to nine key junctions. Two new road bridges are planned between Mussafah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City, together with an additional pedestrian bridge.

Wider connectivity plans

The Mussafah project complements a broader effort to strengthen connectivity across Abu Dhabi. This includes a planned two‑tunnel undersea link between the eastern tip of Abu Dhabi Island and Mussafah, passing beneath Khor Al Maqta and Al Hudayriyat Island channel.
